Whether you love thrills, are passionate about the mountains or simply curious to try a tandem flight, the Vosges are an ideal destination to rise high and see the region differently.

Fly over the Vosges

Paragliding reveals the Vosges landscapes from a new angle. From the summits, the view opens onto high pastures, valleys, fir trees, glacial lakes and the rounded hills of the mountains.

On clear days, the view can stretch to the Alsace plain, the Black Forest and sometimes the Swiss Alps. It is a perfect activity for a memorable moment during your stay at the campsite.

In the Vosges, some forty take-off sites let pilots and specialist schools enjoy a variety of locations. Conditions change with wind direction, altitude and air currents, so every flight is a unique experience.

The Munster valley paragliding site

The Munster valley has a recognised paragliding site: Le Schnepfenried / Mittlach. It is a fine starting point for experienced pilots and supervised groups.

The same Schnepfenried area is also home to the Form’Aventures tree-top park, a good option to keep young and old busy while the pilots take off.

The take-off is at 1,245 metres, facing east to north-east, with a height difference of about 645 metres.

Access is via the Munster valley towards the Route des Crêtes on the D27. Parking is compulsory at the Platzerwasel pass, then the take-off is reached on foot in about 15 minutes along the path.

This site is mainly usable in a north-easterly wind and requires good knowledge of flying conditions and the area.

Tandem paragliding flights in the Vosges

For a first experience, several specialist schools offer tandem paragliding flights in the Vosges. With a qualified instructor, you discover the sensations of free flight with no previous experience needed.

A tandem flight lets you fully enjoy the scenery, feel the air currents and experience a rush of adrenaline in an exceptional natural setting.

Schools can also offer progression or advanced courses for pilots who want to become more independent.

The Markstein, a benchmark site for paragliding

The Markstein, Le Treh is one of the most famous paragliding sites in the Vosges. At about 1,206 metres, it is one of the major free-flight sites in eastern France.

Its south-west orientation and excellent thermals allow superb flights when conditions are favourable.

The Centre École du Markstein is also known as the oldest free-flight school still operating in France. It is a benchmark for discovering paragliding, progressing or taking a tandem flight in a safe setting.

Other paragliding sites in the Vosges

The Vosges have several other sites popular with pilots and schools.

The Drumont

The Drumont faces north-east and is located near the Bussang pass. Its take-off is at about 1,200 metres, close to the Drumont farm inn.

It is a very good morning site in an easterly wind, mostly for experienced pilots.

The Gustiberg

The Gustiberg faces south to south-east. At 1,024 metres, it has a height difference of about 560 metres.

It suits morning flights or light southerly winds. The take-off is reached on foot after a forest track.

The Rothenbachkopf

The Rothenbachkopf rises to 1,316 metres. South of the Hohneck on the Route des Crêtes, it offers a spectacular setting.

Its north-east to east orientation gives good ridge lift depending on conditions. This site is for experienced pilots only.

An activity between adrenaline and contemplation

Paragliding in the Vosges is much more than a thrill. It is also about patience, observation and connecting with the elements.

Before flying, you look at the sky. You analyse the wind. You observe the terrain. Then comes take-off, with that unique feeling of freedom.

Above the ridges, the landscape reveals itself differently. Fir trees line the slopes, lakes sparkle between the valleys and the high pastures stretch out beneath your feet.

It is a perfect activity for holidaymakers who want a lasting memory of their stay in the Munster valley.
